Can a picture be Cursed ?....Part 2

Having previously established that one of my photographs was clearly evil and did not want to leave the house. I had decided to replace it for my latest exhibition.

The strange thing is that it turned out that the new portrait image was exactly the right orientation for the display. If I had gone with the original landscape image the hanging would have looked completely wrong.

Even weirder, no sooner had I hung the new picture up than someone asked to buy it!

Clearly, it wasn't a cursed picture it was just trying to stop me doing the wrong thing.

Spooky!!!

Can a picture be cursed?

My latest exhibition opens on Thursday so, of course, there has been lots to do with pictures to frame and labels to write, etc, etc.

I have explained how I mount and frame pictures before, it;s not a particularly complicated process and each part just takes a few minutes. I printed a batch of photos at 12"x18" then left them for a few days to let those gasses out.

Framing and mounting progressed as normal: clean the glass, mount the picture, drop the picture into the frame, check it, spot some dust on the glass, clean the glass, put the picture back in the frame, check it, spot some dust on the glass, clean the glass, put the picture back in the frame, check it, spot some dust on the glass, clean the glass, put the picture back in the frame, finally decide enough is enough seal up the back of the frame.

This was how it went for all but one picture, this shot just wouldn't line up with the mount correctly. It took about 20minutes to do what should have taken a few seconds, I then put it in the frame, did the traditional glass cleaners dance and sealed up the back. I then realised I hadn't signed & numbered it. So out it came, a quick signature, drop it back into the frame, turn it over to check for dust and then turn it over only to discover the glass had broken!

By this time I am jolly miffed with this picture and I decide to leave it & come back to it later.

A week passes and I have another go at framing it. I grab a spare frame, drop the picture into it turn it over and the F*!%**ing glass has broken! I never break the glass on my frames and now 2 have gone on the same picture. A frantic phone call and trip to the glazers ensue and then I have 2 new pieces of glass.

By this time I have decide the phot is cursed and the only person who is likely to buy it is Linda Blair or Damien from the Omen. So I print a different picture, mount it & frame it with no problem at all!

Below is the picture I ended up framing - I won't show you the accursed one as it may bring down my website.

Oh and I decided to shred the other picture for public safety reasons.

Painters with Light Exhibition at the Octagon

I have just got back from hanging the latest exhibition by The Painting with Light Society - it is at the Octagon in Colchester.

In to the Octagon

I thought I would share a few pictures of the exhibition as I think it looks great. It took four of us three hours to hang the exhibition and there was hardly any swearing involved at all!

The complete exhibition

The exhibition runs till August with a launch night on the 22nd of May. The Octagon is an office building shared by many companies. The staff and visitors pass through the exhibition on their way to the building from the carpark.

If you wish to visit the exhibition its fine to go between 8.30 and 6 workdays. Just go in the main doors and ask to be pointed in the right direction for the exhibition. If you want to go at the weekend we need to contact The Octagon to arrange.

If this is not convenient then, don't worry as the exhibition will be moving to a public library later in the year.

Painters with Light Gallery Owners Presentation

The Painting with Light team get quite a few enquiries from gallery owners about exhibitions and being visually orientated folk we decided to create a presentation about the group and its work. Dave Peck did all the hard work, designing and building a powerpoint presentation to showcase our work.

The thing is, powerpoint is not really a format you want to stick on the web. So I have used authorPoint Lite to convert the presentation to flash and then stuck it on some spare webspace. If you get a spare few minutes, why not take a look at the Painitng with Light Society Gallery Owners Presentation and let me know what you think.

I have had a couple of mails from people trying to use my Limited Edition Management System (LEMON) on Access97 and failing miserably.

For these poor souls I have created LEMON for Access 97, I hope you find it of use.

And for no apparent reason here is a picture I took in Southwark Cathedral the other day as part of my Friday Lunchtime Project:

I've got a gig

As mentioned in a previous blog I have decided to try avoiding the conventions of photography when it comes to exhibiting my work.

Not for me the conventional exhibition, no I've got myself a music gig. I will be exhibiting my pictures as part of a charity concert for Haven House Hospice, pictures will be available at special pricing and for each photograph sold £10 goes to the Hospice.

If you can come along it would be great to see you there:

We got an award!

Well September has only just started and it's a pretty fine month in my opinion. After an August where events conspired to stop me taking hardly any pictures at all, I managed to get down to Leigh-on-Sea for the dawn on Saturday morning and capture some interesting light.

In addition I am chuffed to bits that this site has been awarded "website of the month" by Outdoor Photography magazine. It's actually for the October issue but magazines being what they are the issue is out now. A big welcome to all those hundreds (indeed hundreds, I checked my logs) of people who saw the article and decided to check out the site. Hope you will stick around.

The final piece of good news is that I have a gig. Yes a gig, not an exhibition. I have been invited to exhibit my pictures as part of a charity concert. More details real soon.

Yup, September is a good month.

Holding your first Photography Exhibition

I'm still spring cleaning the site and migrating the articles section of the site into this here blog malarkey. So I though I would point you all in the direction of an article I wrote three yeas ago.

Setting up an Exhibition gives a few pointers on setting up your first exhibition. Since that first exhibition I have become quite practised at putting on exhibitions. Reading it again I still feel it offers some useful advice that you rarely see on any of the photography sites on the web.

Bluebell Stripes

I hope it is of interest and to borrow a line from my own article:
If you are thinking of putting on an exhibition then go for it, you won’t regret it.

Lemon ~ Limited Edition Management ONline

Many photographers who produce Limited Edition prints of their work have developed ad-hoc systems to manage them.

Faced with the constant headache of maintaining what has been printed and sold, which numbers have been allocated, etc. I decided to develop a system to bring this under control. The current release features:

  • Keep track of editions and sales easily from one screen.
  • Block Allocate ~ reserve a group of prints for a particular customer.
  • Certificates of Authenticity.
  • Print Run ~ Mark a group of prints as printed and generate the appropriate certificates.
  • Sales reports.
  • AutoAllocate© ~ When creating an edition numbers can be automatically allocated.

This is free software. The only thing I ask is that you mail me if you use it. The reason for this is so that I can mail out notices of any bug fixes/enhancements to existing users as soon as they are spotted. I like to keep track of the number of users out there. It's not much to ask is it?

New Release - Version 1.1 Released 23 Oct 2006

  • First Release used in anger :)
  • Added ability to generate single certificate
    Added Image path rename form
    Added version History
    Added new certificate Format "Shepherdpics"
  • Recreated the reports to provide useful info!
    Various minor fixes

Where can I get this fantastic software ?

download Click here to download

Access97 Version

How do I install it ?

The Installation is very straight forward. Here are the instructions.

Where can I get support ?

Check out the users guide, if that doesn't help then simply mail me and I will see if I can help.

Does it cost anything ?

Nope not a sausage. If you would like to donate a thankyou gift then please use the paypal button below and I will make sure all payments go to charity.

I made the papers

I have had a picture in The East Anglian Daily Times yesterday. As part of a three page feature on the exhibition at The Basement Gallery, Ipswich.

The picture chosen was "May in July", taken at sunset on Derwent Water. I haven't actually seen the paper myself as I am well out of their circulation area, but I am told it looks good.

Edward Norton - Nature Photographer

Last weekend I popped up to The Basement Gallery to see how my work was going in The Painters With Light Exhibition that is on there.

Whilst I was there I was very pleased to see Edward Norton's first exhibition in the same gallery. I have met Edward on many occasions and its always a pleasure to shoot along side such a talented technician and all round good chap.

Having seen his work on the web it was great to see his work as prints, where they really come to life. If you are visiting Ipswich in January I strongly recommend you pop down to The Basement Gallery: 11 Elm St & 12-14 Princes St and checkout Edwards Beautiful images.
