New Year in Devon

Well I'm back now from spending a lovely refreshing break in Devon for the New Year. We had a cottage right on the beach at North Hallsands.

The weather was fun with no rain, but the storms lashed the beach making it easy to see why there is only North Hallsands - South Hallsands disappeared in a storm in 1917.

The whole area of The South Hams is very beautiful and it's so tranquil at this time of year it is hard to believe that Start Bay was once the location for thousands of American Soldiers and Sailors to practice the D-Day landing. Unfortunately many perished off Slapton Sands in Operation Tiger and the memorial to them (a recovered Sherman DD tank) is rather moving.

Start Bay ends in Start Point with its own delightful Lighthouse. I was there very early and when I got out the car a fox was sitting looking at me, it's always good to have company on a shoot. I found my way down the rocky outcrop overlooking the light house and I'm rather pleased with the resulting shot.

All in all a good weeks break and a great start to the new year.

What a rubbish summer

In these days of climate change, it seems that I hardly ever seem to hear a weather forecast without them using the words "since records began". It's always the wettest, hottest, coldest month since records began. This year it was the turn of August to be the most rubbish since records began.

August in the UK usually has a few days of blue sky and sometimes the sun even pops out, If the sun appears for 3 days in a row it is traditional for The Sun to run the headline "Phew What A Scorcher". This year was different, a blanket of cloud seemed to cover the entire UK and didn't shift for the entire month.

So it was a triumph of optimism over experience when I headed down to Leigh-on-Sea for Dawn on Bank Holiday Monday morning. Even though metcheck said it wouldn't be cloudy, I was convinced I wouldn't see the sun as I got up at 4:00am that morning. So I was absolutely amazed as the sun came up and there was no cloud cover. I got plenty of shots as this little fishing port came alive due to high tide coinciding with dawn.

As I drove away the cloud cover came back & we reverted to "Claggy August". I was lucky to get these shots, but sometimes you make your own luck!

As Editor of the photo locations section in Ephotozine, I am always on the look out for new location guides. I have just come across The new Forest Explorers Guide being produced by Andrew Walmsley.

Widemouth Bay Location Report

As I may have mentioned I am the Photo Locations Editor for Ephotozine. The idea of the Locations Section is for people to share their favourite photographic location with other photographers, whether it is ideal for Landscapes, Architecture, Wildlife or anything else.

I am just working through some shots from last year and have used these to create a report for Widemouth Bay in Cornwall, which is a fantastic summer location for surfing and sunset shots. Last year I visited it three evenings running as I really loved the place on a warm summers evening.

UK Landscape Photography Location Guides

One of the greatest skills a Landscape photographer can develop is the ability to read a map and find new locations that may just bear fruit.

But this is the 21st century and the web allows us to share our favourite locations, so If you are looking for a location for landscape photography in the UK then here are a few really useful resources I have found that should help point you in the right direction.

Chris Maddock has produced The Lazy Photographers Guides which cover many great locations less than half a mile from road access.

If you are looking for a location Wales then take a look at the guides on LandscapePhotographyUK. Simon Kitchen has done a great job by creating a whole series of Location guides to North Wales and Anglesey.

I should also mention the ePhotozine locations section that is edited by yours truly. This has guides to many locations in the UK and the rest of the world.

Are there any other Photo location guides out on the web. If you know of one then please add a comment and let me know.

Forest Frolics

Well yesterday was the day of the 4th Annual Ephotozine Epping Forest trip. Considering that the trip is always held on the first day of British Winter Time, over the years we have been very fortunate with the weather. This year our luck wasn't so good as it was a decidedly damp day though the heavy rain held off for a while.

I was hopping that as the trees had started to turn that people would be able to get some shots of the foliage like this:

But the wind made that a bit tricky.

A popular subject on the meet is the various forms of fungus that can be found in the forest. This year the fungus was thin on the ground and took some finding but most people got some shots. Though Nick Brandon had a rather interesting experience:

Things started off well, found a few decent fungi to photograph early on, great.

Had a little wander, further afield and found some more, got too engrossed and lost everyone.

After 3 1/2 hours I went towards a branch upon which I could see some porcelain fungus growing......

Next thing I know, I'm waist deep in foul smelling mud and sinking deeper every time I move.
Managed to claw my way out minus two wellies, heart was going like a steam train by this time.
I found a log that I could carry and put it where I thought my wellies were and after 20 minutes had managed to dig my wellies out !!!!!

After this mishap I looked back to where I had walked, no sign of a bog, just a carpet of golden leaves.

Moral of this story, BE VERY CAREFUL IN THE WOODS.......

Sorry Nick!

The meet ended with a few jars in a local ale house which gave us all a chance to warm up and chat. I don't normally take many shots on the meet as I enjoy myself chatting to the other photographers too much. I did manage to get this picture of some puffballs. For those of you who are interested in the technical details : 300mm f/4 & 1.4 extender - 30Seconds @ f/45..with 10 bursts of flash.

All in all an enjoyable day, despite the weather.

Fun in the Forest

If you are in the London area and have Sunday free then why not join us for The Ephotozine Epping Forest meet. I have been running the meet for the last four years and it's always been good fun. Groups of photographers spend the day spread out through the forest getting up lose and personal with some fungus and ferns.

As part of the preparation on Saturday morning I tried out an alternative location in the forest with Clive Burrow. I knew it would be a good morning as a shoot with Clive is always a pleasure.

Here is Clive's shot of me taking the above picture (blooming paparazzi you can't get away from them!).

Not Down in the Dales

I've just got back from a pleasant week in the Yorkshire Dales. The Dales have been a favourite place of mine since I first crawled in its caves as a teenager.

I find the limestone landscape endlessly fascinating with rivers appearing and disappearing from cracks in the rocks, naturally terraced mountains, deep potholes and waterfalls round every corner. Man's influence seems only to have improved the beauty of the place with the dry stone walls and regularly placed field barns imposing a pleasing geometry on nature.

Whilst in Reeth I had the pleasure to visit The Scenic View Gallery

Gunnerside Bottom
by The Scenicview Gallery

It was a real joy to see a gallery with great landscape photography thriving in that very same landscape The gallery features a variety of landscape, animal and abstract shots all of which reflect the many moods of the dales.

Well worth a visit if you are up that way or just visit the website.

Elterwater Location Report

As I may have mentioned I am the Photo Locations Editor for Ephotozine. The idea of the Locations Section is for people to share their favourite photographic location with other photographers, whether it is ideal for Landscapes, Architecture, Wildlife or anything else.

I have just posted up a report for Elterwater which is one of the most beautiful parts of the Lake District. I was lucky enough to be in position overlooking the village as the dawn came up on a fine, cold winters day. The warm morning light made the foliage positively glow, a magical moment indeed.
